Information on BloemfonteinBloemfontein Bloemfontein is Free State's capital and is also known as the 'City of Roses'. Bloemfontein is centrally situated roughly in the middle of the Free State province, as well as in South Africa. Bloemfontein is the sixth largest city in South Africa and also the Judicial Capital. Bloemfontein has an excellent infrastructure including some of South Africa's best schools, such as Grey College and Eunice, and tertiary institutions. The name, Bloemfontein, means Spring of Flowers and the town lives up to its name. Bloemfontein has thousands of rose bushes which line the roadsides. It has a small nature reserve in the middle of the city and the Orchid House is a must for lovers of flowers. The Free State Botanical Gardens on the outskirts of Bloemfontein covers about 70ha with large areas left in a close to natural state. There are lovely walks, a lawn to chill out on, a dam with a bird hide, a restaurant, an environmental education centre and an indigenous plants nursery. The more formal section of the garden includes a medicinal plants display and a garden highlighting water-conserving ways of gardening. Historical buildings in Bleomfontein include the City Hall, Old Presidency, buildings of judicial implication, the Anglican Cathedral, railway station, the Dutch Reformed twin tower church and many more. The atmosphere that one feels in Bloemfontein is one based on an appreciation of family values with quality of life of prime importance. There is little stress and less haste; the peaceful atmosphere, which is somehow almost tangible, can be felt in every street, on every pavement - all of which are noticeably clean and free of litter. The cost of living in Bloemfontein is also among the most competitive in South Africa. Suburbs included in Bloemfontein are Woodland Hills Wildlife Estate, Bayswater, Brandwag, Ehrlichpark, Fauna, Fichardtpark, Fleurdal, Gardeniapark, Generaal De Wet, Hospitaalpark, Kiepersol, Langenhoven Park, Lourierpark, Park West, Pellissier, Uitsig, Universitas, Westdene, Wilgehof and Willows to the south of the city. To the north of Bloemfontein, you will find Langenhovenpark, Arboretum, Dan Pienaar, Helicon Heights, Heuwelsig, Hillsboro, Hillside, Hilton, Naval Hill, Navalsig, Noordhoek, Pentagon Park, Waverley and Heidedal. The predominantly black suburbs are; Rocklands, Phahameng, Phelindaba, Bloemanda and the most historic Bochabela where the Maphikela House (where the African national Congress - ANC started) is situated.
