Bloemfontein accommodation

In the heart of the Free State, lying snuggly just outside Bloemfontein, lies a beautifully restored old farmhouse, De Oude Kraal Country Estate. We offer you rest and tranquility after a long day's travel in luxury and romantic accommodation or spend a few days unwinding on the farm. Adorned with family heirlooms and collectables, the homestead offers old world charm, whilst Gerhard's exclusive bar and wine cellar provides a wide variety to satisfy all discerning guests. Marie's renowned Free State cuisine offers a gourmet dinner by candlelight, a hearty farm breakfast and is a culinary feast in all aspects. A Complimentary afternoon tea with cakes awaits you upon check-in. Lounge in the sun, read a book from our in-house library and experience the peacefull park-like gardens under the blue-gum trees. Explore the farm by horseback, footpaths or by sundown tractor ride or enjoy one of our many outdoor activities. De Oude Kraal Country Estate is based on a 2400Ha working sheep farm owned by a 6th Generation family. Looking at the acclaim received by De Oude Kraal there is a certain sense of incredulity. Travel Agents from abroad come to do an introduction tour, to see whether the glowing feedback is justified, and they never leave disillusioned. On the contrary, they always embrace the experience that is De Oude Kraal and can recommend us with the certainty that we will give their clients a highlight during their visit to South Africa.

The concept of De Oude Kraal has its origin from the native Koi Tribe using the natural rocks from the area to build the kraal(enclosure). The reason for the Kraal was to keep their livestock safe from predators. Our Guest House is a natural extension from the Kraal concept in that our guests immediately feel and enjoy the tranquility, security and serenity of De Oude Kraal. Upon check-in there are a variety of options open to them concerning things to do. They can go for a leisurely stroll through our extensive lush gardens, lounge by the pool with a book on loan from our in-house library or explore the main house

For the more adventurous guests we have, clay pigeon shooting, hiking and horse-riding trails from beginner to advanced. You don’t have to be an ornithologist to appreciate our rich and varied bird list as compiled by Judge Howie during his stay on the farm, and having a Bird hide tucked away and fully equipped with local bird lists and binoculars, make for a very pleasant late afternoon activity. Upon their arrival for afternoon check-in our guests are treated to a complimentary and traditional country tea with fresh home-baked cakes and tarts. There after they can embark on a Sundown drive by tractor and wagon on one of our custom designed trails and be treated to a spectacular Free State sunset and catch a glimpse of our herds of Springbuck and Blesbuck roaming free on the farm.

Returning to the main house for dinner time our guests are invited to visit Gerhard’s in-house wine cellar – De Oude Kelder, listed as one of the top 17 Restaurant wine lists in South Africa by Diners Club and select a wine to compliment your dinner with friendly advice at hand if requested. Marie Lombard as the chef was born and raised at De Oude Kraal . She artfully combines Farm Style South African cooking with a touch of French flair to produce a 6-Course Gourmet dinner that delights all.

Our breakfast is served as a buffet that caters to all tastes. Following the breakfast your clients could embark on a day trip of their liking or just relax at De Oude Kraal.
